7th Grade Social Studies
Purpose: During the course of the year you will have a better historical and geographical understanding of the world. Seventh grade students will analyze and interpret historical events to comprehend the cooperation and conflict within and between world cultures. Students will also analyze numerous representations of the Earth’s geography and identify locations of countries, landforms, and historical events. We will study several different historical events using textbook World History: Journey Across Time, By McGraw-Hill: Glencoe. We will have unit exams after each chapter (summative tests to include: matching, multiple choice, short answer, visuals (charts, maps, etc) and portfolios, that are made up of all practice work done during the unit being studied that will help show proof of the understanding (formative work must be at least 70% correct & students are responsible to conference with me). We will have individual projects throughout the school year that will coincide with the unit we are covering at the time. Here are some of the areas that we will cover:
· Medieval Era
· African Civilizations
· Early American Civilizations
· Enlightenment/American Revolution
· Industrial Revolution/Nationalism
· World War I
· World War II
· Cold War
· Current Issues
Classroom Needs: Each day you will need to bring the following materials: your agenda planner, a writing utensil (must be legible), Social Studies folder, and notebook. You will not be permitted to go to your locker for any materials or assignments after the bell rings.
Practice work: Practice work is not an option. It is a very important part of your grade!! Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the day that it is due unless you are otherwise notified by your teacher. If you consistently do not hand in your assignments, other measures may be taken.
Make –UP Work – If assignments are missed due to an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to find out what they missed while absent. Assignments should be written in the agenda for the days absent. The student will be given two days for each day absent to make up the assignments. IF IT IS A SCHOOL EVENT or THE STUDENT KNOWS THEY WILL BE ABSENT FOR ANY REASON, the work will be done ahead of time including projects and assessments. If a project is due/or a test was missed on the day the student was absent, that project is due or test will be taken the day they return to school. If there is a special circumstance, please see me and we will work on it together.
Late Work Policy – Work is due on the date that student’s are given. All work will be completed.
Cheating policy- Cheating will not be tolerated! Any student providing or receiving information on an assignment, project, or test, will receive an automatic zero.
Grading Scale:
Grades will be given every trimester based on tests/quizzes (75% of final grade) and practice work (25% of final grade). The Oskaloosa Schools grading scale will be used to determine your letter grade.
